The Craftsmanship Initiative

The Craftsmanship Initiative is a nonprofit organization founded by journalist Todd Oppenheimer to celebrate and preserve the timeless values of excellence, beauty, and durability through multimedia storytelling. Its flagship project, Craftsmanship Magazine, is an ad-free digital publication that explores the work and philosophies of artisans, innovators, and makers around the world.

Since 2015 we’ve served as production manager and web development partner for the magazine. The current site is the third iteration we’ve launched together, designed to modernize the experience and make the platform more dynamic and flexible for a growing audience.

The site is rich in features, supporting a wide range of content types – long and short format stories, podcasts, interviews, videos, photo essays and galleries, and community resources – all organized by topics, materials, and themes. With over 150 contributors and years of editorial output, the site architecture needed to handle complex taxonomies, a global artisans’ directory with interactive mapping, and detailed contributor profiles. We also integrated user account creation, interactive forms, and various donation and subscription paths to support their mission-driven funding model.

The end result is a vibrant, evolving digital magazine that reflects the artistry and thoughtfulness of the stories it tells, and that continues to grow as a platform for makers and storytellers alike.
